Officially recognized as the City of
Los Angeles, is the second most populated city in the United States and the
most populated city in the state of California. It is popularly abbreviated as

Angeles is also dubbed as City of Angels as translated from Spanish. L.A. is widely

city. Los Angeles also has the honor of hosting the Olympic Games twice, first
in 1932 and then in 1984.
The City of Los Angeles was founded
by the settlement of 11 Mexican families who were recognized as Los Pobladores
which means the “Townspeople”. The 44 early settlers included 22 adults and 22
children. The Spanish California governor at that time Felipe de Neve named
this settlement as El Pueblo Sobre el Rio de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los
Angeles del Río de Porciúncula which means Our Lady the Queen of the angels of
Porcincula). However the name was shortened later. The city was formally
founded on September 4th, 1781. With the passage of time more people
came into this city and by 1800, the population of the city reached to 315 and
reached to 650 by 1820.
In the year of 1821, Los Angeles attained
liberty from the Spanish rule. Mexico’s independence from Spain was celebrated enthusiastically
and passionately throughout Alta California. The pueblo continued to be part of
the Mexico. In 1822, the Plaza Catholic Church was commenced and the city
continued to nurture and cherish. The freedom from the Spanish rule helped the
city to get the required economic growth. Many new residents settled in L.A.
which included Indians, Europeans, Americans and Mexicans. The population in 1841
reached to 1,680. Mexican rule ended in 1847.
The Mexican control of Los Angeles
ended in the result of Mexican-American War. The charge of Los Angeles was
taken by the Americans after a chain of scuffles and finished by the signing of
the Treaty of Cahuenga in 1847 on January 13th. By 1876, railroads
were built from the Southern Pacific line to Los Angeles. Oil was discovered in
the area in 1892 and by the end of 1923 many unearthing discoveries assisted
California in becoming the largest oil producer in the motherland.
By 1900 the population of Los Angeles
reached above 102,000. The rising population exerted pressure on the water
supply of the city. For this purpose in 1913, the Los Angeles Aqueduct was
completed under the administration of William Mulholland which guaranteed the
safe sailing and smooth growth of the city. The city’s charter put a stop to
selling or distributing water from aqueduct to any area out of the city’s
borders. Many nearby societies and communities were constrained to give control
and annex themselves into Los Angeles.
In 1910, Hollywood amalgamated into
Los Angeles. At that time, 10 movie
companies were operating in Hollywood. In the year 1921, major chunk about 80%
of world’s film industry was based in Los Angeles. During the Great Depression,
the city of Los Angeles managed to keep it flourishing and shielded from the
recession because of the wealth generated by the industry. By 1930, the city’s
population grew to 1 million. In 1932, Los Angeles was also able to host the
Summer Olympics. In the times of World War II (WW II) L.A. was the focus of
manufacturing which included shipbuilding and aircrafts. Hundreds of Liberty
ships and Victory ships were built, in fact Los Angeles was headquarter to the
six of the major aircraft companies. After the end of World War II, Los Angeles
continued to grow.
In the 1960s, the race issues heated
up and eventually led to the Watts Riots of 1965. This riot ate up 34 lives and
about 1000 injuries took place. It was one of the most serious riots faced by
Los Angeles throughout its history. Los Angeles also has the honor of becoming
the place of birth for the internet in 1969.
The first ARPANET transmission was sent from the University of
California also known as UCLA to SRI in Menlo Park.
In 1984, L.A. hosted the Summer
Olympics for the second time. These games were boycotted by 14 Communist Countries;
however these games proved to be monetarily more successful. The racial issues
reheated once again in 1992 by the judgment which cleared police officers
beating Rodney King. The video of this brutality surfaced local news at that
time. This riot killed 53 and more than 2000 were injured. These racial
tensions also resulted in a loss of $ 1.3 billion in the form of damages. Despite
such situations and challenges, L.A. managed to grow over the years.
The City of L.A. also have obsession
for the sports. The craze for soccer is also high in the city. The Los Angeles
Football Club is a famous American football franchise which was established in
2014 and started to play in 2018. The Los Angeles Angels is a well known American
baseball franchise which is based in Anaheim, California. The Angels franchise
was established back in 1961 by Gene Autry. It contends in Major League
Baseball as an affiliate club of American League. In 2012 the Los Angeles Kings
win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. L.A is also famous for some car chases.
