Now let’s have a look at the brief
history of the City of Las Vegas.
Las Vegas was founded in 1905. It was
incorporated as a city in 1911. The year of 1928 saw the construction of Hoover
Dam which brought many thousands of workers to the area. What is now celebrated
as Boulder City was set up for the workers. The year of 1931 proved to be a crucial
year in the Vegas’ history. It was this year when the state of Nevada legalized
gambling. The downtown Las Vegas became the centre of leisure and amusement for
the dam workers with casinos and speakeasies. The incursion of construction workers
and their families for the construction of the dam helped in avoid the monetary
catastrophe in the times of Great Depression. The business was rising and
financial conditions were so good that Vegas passed Reno as the gambling
capital of the world. At the same time, Los Angeles was also on the rise as a
global center but because at that time gambling was not allowed in California,
many people travelled to Vegas to enjoy the vacations and recreational
activities.
In 1941, the lavish El Rancho Vegas
resort was opened and later became the Las Vegas Strip. In 1946, Flamingo Hotel
was established by Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. With the opening of these two
hotels and resorts, the city saw a construction boom and a tradition of one-upmanship
was started as every new building whether a casino or a hotel, tried to outdo
the other ones. This tradition is still present in the Vegas. In the 1950s, the
Moulin Rouge started to function and it was the first racially integrated casino-hotel
in the city. Nuclear weapons testing started in 1951 at the Nevada Test Site
which is 65 miles from the Vegas City. The residents of the city and visitors
were able to witness the mushroom clouds during those tests until 1963. It was in 1963 when the Test Ban Treaty
required the nuclear tests to be carried out underground. The symbolic “Welcome
to Las Vegas” sign was crafted by Betty Willis in 1959, though sign was never
located inside the city.
In the 1960s many corporations and business
tycoons started to build and buy hotel and casino properties. One of the famous
names of business power houses included Howard Hughes. During this period
gambling was started to be called as “gaming” which helped in transitioning into
legitimate business. 1995 was the year when Las Vegas saw the opening of
Fremont Street Experience in the downtown area. This was a five block canopied
area marking 12.5 million LED lights and 550,000 watts of sound from twilight
to midnight during the shows held. The year
2012 was nicknamed as “The Year of Downtown” because of projects which
initiated in that year were worth of hundreds of millions of dollars. These included
the Smith Center for the Performing Arts and DISCOVERY Children's Museum, Mob
Museum, Neon Museum etc.
In the modern times, Las Vegas is the
one of the most popular cities in the world. It is able to attract thousands of
people every year who visit the City of Las Vegas for different purposes such
as films, casinos and gambling, hotels and resorts and entertainment
activities.
