Pakistan and China Relations
Brief History
China got
independence in 1949, two years later than Pakistan. In 1950, Pakistan was one
of the first countries to recognize People’s Republic of China. Both the
countries started their diplomatic ties in 1951. It was in 1956 when Pakistani
Prime Minister Huseyn Suhrawardy signed the treaty of friendship with the
Chinese counterpart Zhou Enlai in Beijing.
It was Pakistan who arranged a meeting between USA and Pakistan. It’s better
to say that Pakistan introduced China and US with each other.
In 1972 Pakistan
helped in arranging a US President Richard Nixon’s visit to China. During 1978,
the historic Karakoram Highway was officially opened which linked both
countries through road. During all these years, China has helped Pakistan
financially and technically both. Not only this, China has also helped Pakistan
in establishing its defense structure. A joint venture building the famous
Al-Khalid Tank for Pakistan army was completed in 2001. In 2007, joint venture
for manufacturing of JF-17 Thunder fighters jets was rolled out. China also
helped Pakistan in overcoming the energy crisis by investing in the energy
sector and providing technical help. The
latest and mega adventure of Pak-China friendship is CPEC (China Pakistan
Economic Corridor), the development of Gwadar sea port and connectivity with
China under the OBOR (One Belt One Road) vision. Under the same project, agricultural
technology is also being introduced in Pakistan.
If we start
counting the events in Pakistan and China history, we will find many and the
counting will go on and on forever. The history provided here is to make the
readers understand that how strong and cordial relationship both countries
share with each other.
Today’s Status
Today, the
Pak-China friendship is deeper than oceans, higher than Himalayas and sweeter
than honey. Pakistan calls China it’s all weather friend. High majority of
Pakistanis believe China is our true and trusted friend. It has helped Pakistan
when ever Pakistan needed the most.
Today, not only
the governments of both countries but the people of two countries are connecting
with each other. Many nationals from Pakistan and China are marrying each
other. This is something which normally didn’t happen in the past. Pakistan’s tough times are still not over. With
the strains between Pakistan and US, it is China which is urging the global community
to recognize the efforts and sacrifices of Pakistan in war on terror. Pakistan
and China’s relations are often compared to the US-Israel ties because of the support
they give to each other.
Whenever we face
tough time, China is there to back us. Pakistanis see Chinese as their
brothers. Now there are news that Chinese giant Ali Baba is also entering
Pakistan which will help in boosting the business affairs in the business
sector. Jack Ma have shown much interest in Pakistan.
At the end I
would pray that this friendship continues to grow and become exemplary in the
world. Both countries are playing their role in making the region safer and peaceful.
We wish Pakistan and China continue to rise.
